So What The Heck Is A Monstera?

Only one of the best houseplants out there. You've probably seen the little ones at your local nursery or in the plant section at the grocery store — a few solid leaves, sitting in a 6-inch pot, easy to walk past.

But give those guys time and the right care and they get big. In the rainforests of southern Mexico and Central America, where they're from, monsteras climb tree trunks toward the light and unfurl leaves the size of dinner plates. The famous splits and holes only show up as the plant matures — nature's way of letting wind and rain pass through without shredding the leaf. The name literally comes from the Latin for monstrous, because early botanists couldn't believe the size of the thing.

They've come to symbolize longevity, abundance, and honoring what's already there — a plant you pass down rather than replace.

That's why the leaf is our logo. Nobody makes a monstera grow. You give it something to climb, put it where the light is, and get out of the way — the plant does the rest, because everything it needs to become that dinner-plate version is already in there. Same with your brand. We're not here to turn you into something you're not. We work with what you've already got and help it grow into the biggest version of itself.

What Is Monstera Marketing?

We're a Baltimore-based social media marketing agency run by two sisters. We handle content creation, photography, strategy, and day-to-day social management for local businesses, teams, and brands.

The name comes from the monstera plant — the one that only unfurls those signature holes once it's mature enough. Growth takes time and the right conditions. We think brands work the same way.

Our History

Carsen and Tiernan grew up in the corn fields of Carroll County — same schools, same soccer fields, same afternoons helping their mom in the garden. Both had a habit of stealing her digital camera to document everything. One Christmas their grandfather handed them a point-and-shoot Canon PowerShot A560 of their own, and that was pretty much that.

Tiernan chased the photography side and took classes in undergrad to learn what actually happens inside a mirrorless moment machine. Carsen went the other direction, straight into the digital landscape called Instagram.

In 2020, in the middle of Covid, Carsen founded the business as Project Connect. Local businesses were cut off from their customers overnight, and helping them stay connected felt urgent. It was her idea, but she knew it wasn't a one-person job — she brought Tiernan on early to build it alongside her, as an equal partner. The name Monstera was Carsen's, but like everything else here, they landed on it together.

Today they run Monstera Marketing LLC as co-owners, growing their clientele and their houseplant collection at roughly the same rate.
